Si un mythe continue à engendrer sans cesse des pièces de théâtre, c'est la force proliférante du mythe qui agit doublement sur ceux qui veulent réécrire ce récit à leur manière. Le dynamisme du mythe les incite, à la fois à être fidèles au modèle et à exiger la liberté de le modifier suivant leur centre d'intérêt particulier. C'est en même temps un phénomène d'intertextualité, que l'on peut appeler "écriture palimpseste", dans laquelle tous ceux qui veulent faire une oeuvre, à partir d'un mythe quelconque, sont obligés de suivre toujours la même ornière : se nourrir des qualités ou des défauts de leurs prédécesseurs. À partir de la présence littéraire du mythe d'Oedipe dans le théâtre français, l'auteur s'efforce ici de décrire diachroniquement l'évolution de ce mythe, autant du point de vue esthétique qu'idéologique, afin de mettre en relief les variations du mythe ainsi que la constance de ses composantes essentielles. Le mythe d'Oedipe pose avant tout un problème ontologique, à savoir que l'on pourrait considérer Oedipe comme le représentant d'une culpabilité collective. Il affronte résolument son destin abominable tout en s'attachant à la vie. Ce qui nous paraît le plus important, c'est ce processus par lequel il se découvre et son humilité vis-à-vis de la réalité contradictoire, paradoxale de son existence. Remarquons également qu'à travers ces différentes analyses, allant de Robert Garnier à Jean Anouilh, le personnage de la mère, Jocaste, s'affirme, nous obligeant à penser au mythe de Jocaste

Der König Ödipus des Sophokles gehört zu den berühmtesten Tragödien der Antike. In der europäischen und auch außereuropäischen Literatur lässt sich eine vielfältige Wirkungsgeschichte nachweisen. Für Aristoteles galt das Drama geradezu als Mustertragödie, und bis in die Gegenwart ist es für die Tragödientheorie von Bedeutung. Gleichzeitig wird bis heute sowohl über das Verständnis des Dramas als auch über die Textgestaltung höchst kontrovers diskutiert. Der König Ödipus wird hier mit kritisch überprüftem griechischen Text, neuer deutscher Übersetzung, ausführlicher Einleitung und fortlaufender Kommentierung vorgelegt. In der Einleitung werden u. a. die Geschichte des Stoffes bis zur Fassung des Sophokles, strittige Probleme der Interpretation und die Rezeption des Dramas behandelt. Die Kommentierung bezieht sich auf den übersetzten Text und ist so konzipiert, dass sie von Lesern ohne Griechischkenntnisse uneingeschränkt benutzt werden kann. Zusätzlich werden für Leser, die den griechischen Text mit heranziehen oder von ihm ausgehen wollen, knapp gefasste textkritische und sprachliche Erläuterungen sowie metrische Analysen der Chorpartien geboten. Sophocles' Oedipus Tyrannus is one of the best-known of all ancient tragedies. A history of its far-reaching and diverse impact can be documented in both European and non-European literature. For Aristotle, this drama represented the ultimate model of tragedy, and it has remained a significant element in the theory of tragedy to this day. In addition, there have been and continue to be major controversies concerning the meaning of the drama and its textual structure. This edition presents Oedipus Tyrannus as a critically revised Greek text with a new German translation, and includes a comprehensive introduction and continuous commentary. The introduction includes a history of the textual material prior to Sophocles's version and takes up contentious issues concerning the interpretation and reception of the drama. The commentary relates to the translated text and is designed to be fully accessible to readers with no knowledge of Ancient Greek. In addition, for those readers who wish to refer to the Greek text or start out from it, there are concise linguistic and critical textual explanations, as well as metrical analyses of the chorus passages.
